Cocktails

To mark the 21st amendment’s 75th anniversary, Angela Woodall’s piece on the cocktail in the Oakland Tribune is worth reading…

The first mention of a martini, per se, was in 1888, and the classic dry martini would arrive in 1906 (the only way to make a martini, vermouth-phobic Winston Churchill once said, was with ice-cold gin and a bow in the direction of France). By then, the relationship between watering holes and police appears already to have been established, judging by the fact that the newest drink recipes for 1901 were printed in a supplement of “The New Police Gazette Bartenders Guide.”

Find a cocktail using the Mixed Drink Recipe Database, which has more than 8,000 to choose from. The featured cocktail today is the “caipirinha” from Brazil…

Cheers!
